Stanford will be hosting their annual International Collegiate Open in Burnham Pavilion.

Participation of the 2016 Olympic Champion Team, Japan guarantees an exciting competition for gymnastics fans of all ages. 

Plus, Stanford is offering a unique opportunity to NCBGA gymnasts and coaches: a clinic in their training facility prior to the competition (11:00am-3:00pm).

Clinic

The clinic will serve to help the athletes focus on specific skills or sequences that they want to perfect or work on in our state-of-the-art facility with coaches from all over NorCal.

What: Boys Gymnastics Clinic at Stanford University, Pizza, and Admission to International Collegiate Open (72 gymnasts max total)

Levels:Level 5 – 10 (we want to try and have a big group of higher level guys if possible)

Entry/Registration Fee & Information:— $10 CASH per athlete + waiver (attached) – $10 will cover pizza for everyone and admission is free to the competition– Coaches are STRONGLY encouraged to come with their athletes to help collaborate with others and assist in running the clinic rotations

Where: — Clinic to be held in the Stanford Gymnastics Training Facility inside the Ford Center (365 Galvez Street, Stanford, CA 94035)– Competition held in Burnham Pavilion (615 Serra Street, Stanford, CA 94305)– Free street parking

When: Saturday, February 23rd– Clinic will be 11:00am – 3:00pm– Pizza will be 3:00pm – 4:00pm– Competition will be 4:00pm – 6:00pm

Why: To offer coaches and athletes an opportunity to work on specific skills/sequences in preparation for State Championships using our world class training facility. We also want coaches and athletes to stay and watch the International Collegiate Open as Stanford and Cal face off against Team Japan in what is sure to be an exciting and fun competition.

Following the clinic, we will have pizza for the boys, and then they will head to the competition hall to watch the competition, which starts at 4pm. 

Space is limited, so sign up early and guarantee a spot for all your athletes.  AND It’s important that we have enough coaches so we can run the clinic safely and efficiently (similar to an All-Star Clinic).

I have officialy resigned my position as the Northern California State Chairman.  I am so greatful for the opportunity to have served this amazing community of dedicated and passionate professionals. 

Syque Caesar has been appointed by the Regional Chairman to replace me as the USA Gymnastics Nor Cal State Chairman.  I am so excited to have Syque stepping up into this daunting position.  I know he will lead Nor Cal to even bigger and better gymnastics. 

I will still see you at meets as I continue to judge and watch in awe of the progress each of you make from meet to meet and season to season.

Reminder To All Coaches and Parents:

Jan 31 is the FINAL day to confirm athlete Levels AND Divisions to be included in the Regional Allotment.  Please triple-check your USAGym rosters to make sure your athletes’ Level, Division AND Birthdates are CORRECT.  Only Division 1 athletes are eligible to qualify to Regionals.  Athletes are ONLY able to qualify to regionals in the level USAGym has listed on Feb 1.

Bayshore Elite Gymnastics is seeking full time, and part time, recreational and team staff.

We are located in Redwood City, California on the peninsula half way between San Francisco and San Jose.  We are looking for highly motivated individuals with a great work ethic, a passion for men’s gymnastics, and enjoy working with boys. Applicants must be “team players”, and work well with other staff members, in a combined effort developing high level gymnasts with the gymnasts best interest in mind.

National Gymnastics Foundation Head Tax / Scholarship Application

Under the current financial conditions, the National Gymnastics Foundation is still in place and operating as normal.  Communicate to all your constituents that the $1/gymnast head tax should be paid on each sanctioned event to avoid any sanction violation.  

On this note, remind your constituents that if they have a graduating senior(s) who may be interested in applying for the Men’s Program 2019 Scholarship, the applications are due to USA Gymnastics by May 15.  Here is the link to the Scholarship page of our website:  http://usagym.org/pages/men/pages/scholarship_program.html

Academic All-American Recognition Award

As mentioned last week, the Academic All-American Recognition Award online application portal is now open. Between Thursday and Monday, I received close to 80 applications.  Our kids are on top of it.  If you haven’t looked at this, I updated the questions for this year and the answers have been simply great to read.  Everyone is different and has great things to say.  For the most part, the majority of the kids are being recognized whether through morning announcements, a page in the year book or interviewed by the online school news portal.  However, there are a few that report that they get no recognition from their school.  Please encourage your coaches to be proactive and if they have athletes in this situation, contact the school(s) to ask about how to get those athletes recognized – even if it is only a morning announcement.  I can see by reading these answers that even the littlest recognition goes a long way.  Here is the link again to the AAA portal – http://usagym.org/pages/men/pages/academic_allamerican.html

Also communicate that this award will now be presented to the athletes at their respective Regional Championship and not JO Nationals.

NCAA Release of Information Online Form

State High School Championship Results

Remember to email me the results for the High School State Championships portion of your State Championships.  A couple of clarifications on this:

1. If your state has an organized state championship, email me those results and I can post them.
2. When reporting the results, it should be:

• High School Team Results (home schools and virtual schools should not be included)
• All-Around Results, if available (may include a high school level home/virtual schooled athlete)
• Individual Event Results, if available (may include a high school level home/virtual schooled athlete)

1. Feel free to include a photo or two and I will post it as well

The Men’s Intercollegiate Gymnastic Support Program, Inc. (MIGS Program) has been working closely with the University of Illinois-Chicago (UIC) Men’s and Women’s Gymnastic Teams and the College Coaches Association to reverse the decision by the administration to eliminate varsity college gymnastics from the UIC campus.  This poorly considered decision will have a rippling adverse affect on gymnastics community and opportunities for current and future generations of male and female gymnasts which is not and cannot be acceptable.

As part of the MIGS Program effort to help with messaging and fundraising, we have designed a ‘#FlipTheDecision’ t-shirt and banner (4’ x 4’) which includes two former UIC gymnasts and the Chicago Skyline superimposed on the outline of the United States.  Please click on the link to see a very relevant message from Mike Burns and the University of Minnesota Men’s Gymnastic Team:

It is our request that every gymnast, alumni, coach, judge, club owner, parent and friend of gymnastics purchase this t-shirt and wear it at every competition this year.  Furthermore, it is our request that every gymnastic team in the country purchase a banner, put on the shirt, create a respectful ‘#Flip The Decision’ picture and video, and send it to the UIC Athletic Director, President and Board of Regents.  It is important that the UIC get a very important message from everyone in the gymnastic community that their decision is a bad one and must be reversed.

On Sunday morning at 3:30am, Paul Tickenoff passed away.  He had been battling ALS for a couple of years.  While ALS may have taken his life, it never took his spirit!

Paul was not only a highly respected judge in Southern California and Region 1, but also across the entire country.  In addition to being a judge, he was also a Region 1 Chairman.  Throughout his life, Paul has done many many things.  Attached is information from when he received the Hiroshi Fujimoto Award in 2017 and a more detailed bio as well.

Paul will be truly missed by everyone.
