NCBGA SUMMER 2003 NEWSLETTER
OPENING REMARKS
Greetings everyone! I hope that you are all having a safe and successful summer. I look forward to seeing all of you at the next general membership meeting and next season.
REPORT FROM NATIONALS
Northern California was very well represented at both JO Nationals and USA Championships. As a result of their fine performances at these events, four Nor-Cal athletes have earned spots on the Junior National Team. At JO Nationals, Class 3 athletes Josh Dixon (CSC) and Kyle Bunthuwong (Golden Bear) placed 10th and 14th all-around respectively. Additionally, Josh and Kyle each won national event titles on floor (Josh) and parallel bars (Kyle). At the USA Championships, Kyson Bunthuwong (Golden Bear) finished 4th all-around, winning silver on p.bars and bronze on high bar. He will be joined on the team by Chad Kinoshita (Demaray’s) who finished 6th all-around, winning gold on p.bars and silver on pommel horse and vault. That’s right, Nor-Cal won gold and silver on parallel bars! Gregory Ter-Zakhariants (San Mateo) competed very strongly, just missing qualifying for the team (8th AA).
NCBGA REGISTRATION
Just a reminder that NCBGA club registration is $70 if paid by August 1st. The fee is $80 if paid by the fall meeting. Athlete memberships are $5 per athlete. Please register early to aid the board in getting accurate numbers. Please send registration to the NCBGA Treasurer: Hiroshi Fujimoto, 220 Dela Vina Avenue, Monterey, CA 93940. Registration may also be paid by credit card, with a 5 percent service charge assessed to all credit card payments.
SUMMER BOARD MEETING
The board held its annual summer meeting July 12 at San Francisco Gymnastics. Special thanks to the Vandermeers for hosting a very productive meeting. The board will be submitting several proposals to the general membership for consideration at the fall general meeting.
AWARDS BANQUET
The annual awards banquet was organized by Hiroshi in Monterey. Turnout was good, but many of our champions and award-winners were absent. Please try to make plans to attend next year. It is a great event! This year’s golf tournament winners were the team of Paul Odze, Aaron Hill and Garth Barker. Great job guys! Thank you Hiroshi for hosting a great event.
PROPOSAL: STATE CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFICATION
The Board is recommending that the following proposal be passed:
Eliminate Zone Championships and Second Qualifier. Qualification to the State Championship will be based on the achievement of a qualifying score to be hit twice during the regular season (at least one score must be achieved in Northern California), which concludes the weekend prior to the Class 1-5 State Championships. The recommended scores are:
Class 5: 46.00 points
Class 6: 48.00 points
Class 7: 50.00 points
All meet directors will be required to send results to the State Chairman and the NCBGA Webmaster. The rationale for this proposal include the following: a shorter season, due to early dates for regional and national events, difficulty in finding hosts for Zones due to budget constraints, and making it fairer and more equitable for all of the athletes.
PROPOSAL: CLASS 7
The Board is recommending that Class 7 remain more participation-oriented. At the State Championships, achievement ribbons will be awarded for individual events, and all athletes will be presented with an all-around medal, with the top six all-arounders per age-group (same as last year) to be recognized on the awards podium.
PROPOSAL: STATE CHAMPIONSHIP REGISTRATION
The Board is recommending the following proposal regarding State Championship registration: Entry fees (one check per club) and club rosters (hard copy) must be postmarked by the Monday prior to the Class 1-5 State Championships. Complete registration forms must be received by the meet director by the Monday before the Class 1-5 State Championships. An administrative late fee of $50 per club and $10 per athlete will be assessed for late and/or incomplete entries.
BIDS NEEDED
Bids are needed for the State Championships. Class1-5 will be held 13-14 March. Class 6-7 will be held 20-21 March. Interested clubs should contact the chairman for more information.
